"OLD NAGS HEAD"

The first oceanfront cottage in Nags Head, NC was built in the mid-1850s by Dr. W.G. Pool. The Elizabeth City man purchased 50 acres for $30. He divided the land into lots and sold them for a dollar apiece to the wives of his friends in Elizabeth City. Cottages were built along a mile stretch of oceanfront property. The cottages were dubbed the Unpainted Aristocracy. Thirteen shingled cottages were built by 1885. The homes featured propped-shuttered windows, hip-roofed porches, and built in benches. Some of the cottages still exist, and the area is an official historic district.
